To,
The Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi
New Delhi, India
Sir,
Like many other countries, we are also going through a very difficult time. Many people lost their jobs, many are struggling to find their livelihood, especially people in the low income sector. Many trapped in different parts of the country, caused by lockdown, are unable to reach their family. After lifting the lockdown only we will get to know the gravity of how badly the people are affected. Sir, at this time I have a suggestion for your kind attention. When we consider our primary needs, food comes first. We have a lot of parks and other public lands in the cities around our country, where the majority of the population lives. For example, there are more than 18000 parks and gardens spread in about 8000 hectare in various locations throughout Delhi. Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kolkata and other cities also have their own share of public lands like parks, gardens or other usable lands. We have a vast area of land as the median of major highways, which are directly connected to cities. Currently we use these land areas- other than the walkways or roads- are to grow different types of lawn grasses, bushes, flowering plants, garden trees etc. But it is difficult to find any fruit bearing plants in these lands. Sir, my suggestion is that, kindly consider the possibility of planting the maximum number of different-seasonal fruit bearing plants, which are suitable for each location- considering the factors like the nature of the soil, climatic conditions etc. We can consider mango trees, jackfruit trees, papaya, guava, oranges, avocados, apples, pomegranates, bananas etc. Of course it will take some time to get the benefit out of it, however it will be definitely beneficial in the future, especially this kind of difficult time. This could give a lot of unemployed people in the cities job and business opportunities too. We can also start planting a maximum number of fast-growing, drought-resistant, very nutritious drumstick trees, wherever possible in the country. Municipal corporations can make provisions for this in the residential areas in big cities. Let other countries also follow us in this regard. I also appeal to you to start an initiative for making awareness of indoor vertical farming among people and encourage and support them who are willing to do the same. This is one of the most effective ways to produce vegetables, especially leaf vegetables in a short time, using less amount of water in cities. Less than 1 percent of per capita use of water in a city is sufficient for this purpose.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
Joseph George.
Bangalore.
